Cameron’s Amazing Book Club

Share in the legacy of the joy of reading…

Purpose

Welcome to the website honoring Cameron Averitt Bobbitt.  Cameron Averitt BobbittCameron was an amazing little girl who died on January 19, 2006. She was truly one of the most precious people to ever walk this earth.  As her parents, we will never be able to express the loss we feel now that Cameron is gone.

Even though Cameron was only five years old when she died, she loved to read books and share them with others. In December 2006, the family and friends of Cameron started a book club in her honor.  This book club was inspired by her grandmother, who is a reading specialist.

We initially received over 200 books just by word of mouth.  On the one year anniversary of Cameron’s death, we personally donated many of these books to schools, hospitals, libraries, and medical clinics. Many people from places that received books collected new books and sent them to us.  This has allowed us to continue to provide books for children who otherwise might not have them.  It is our hope that in receiving these books, children will share in the legacy of the joy of reading the way that Cameron did.

If you would like to help continue the book club, you are welcome to participate. Please purchase a book appropriate for a child of any age and send it directly to Cameron’s parents, Susan Averitt and Derrick Bobbitt.

If you or someone you know needs children’s books, please let us know.  We would love to provide books to schools, clinics, churches, or other organizations that involve children.  Reading with children is a way to help them learn to read, discover lessons about life, and feel loved.

Thank you so much for your interest in the book club. Enjoy your reading!

Sincerely,

Susan and Derrick Bobbitt

I would like to thank everyone who has/will visit this site. At the very least, I would hope that it puts a smile on your face. That is what Cameron did the best, made you smile.   She was the most loving and caring child I have ever met. I love you Reno.  Derrick

The Thousand Hour Club

April 28th, 2007 by GrAnn-Ma

Make your child a member of the thousand hour club by the time he or she goes to school.  Marilyn Jager Adams estimates that among families who routinely read stories to their children, the lucky children spend from 1000 to 1700 hours in one-to-one literacy activities before they enter school.  There is no way for a teacher to make up this time for children with no storybook routines, no magnetic letters, and no pencils.

The advantages are many:

  • They will be familiar with book language.  Where else but in books can you hear phrases like “said Father”?  Books have a way of talking that sounds very strange to the ear of the child who has not been read to.
  • Their vocabularies will increase.  As they hear a wide variety of words used in stories, interesting words will begin to creep into their spoken vocabularies.
  • Their attention spans will lengthen.  As children are read to, they will be able to sit and listen for longer and longer periods of time.  This is voluntary attention, as opposed to attention given to the TV screen, which pulls children in with rapidly changing sights and sounds.  Voluntary attention is critical to success in school.
  • They will develop a love of books as they associate them with a warm, comfortable relationship with the most important person in their lives–YOU!

May 2007

April 27th, 2007 by susan

I am anticipating May with a sense of sadness.  May is Cameron’s birth month.  Cameron was born on May 13, 2000.  This year, May 13 falls on Mother’s Day.  Our family will be traveling to McAlester, OK to see old friends.  On the birthday, we will get together and lauch balloons to our little angel.  The following day we will go to the school Cameron attended (and location of her death) to see a new walking trail.  There is an area next to the trail with a bench, flowers, rock and plaque in memory of Cameron.  I have made a stepping stone to put next to the trail.  Then we will go to the Warren Clinic where I worked to see the tulip tree planted there for Cameron last year.  I heard it survived the ice storm.  Please pray for our strength during this difficult time.  Just thinking about a trip back to McAlester and especially to her school causes me stress.  It is something that I want to do, yet hate to do at the same time.

Many people ask me how I am doing.  I will tell  you, everyday is a challenge.  I cry in the car a lot.  I listen to Christian music.  I try to pray.  I spend time with my family.  I work, sleep, and go throught the daily motions of life.  My beautiful girls keep me going, but one of them is forever gone.  Living without Cameron is the hardest thing I have ever done.  All things considered, I feel I am doing the best I can.  Thanks and take care– Susan

Many Thanks

April 27th, 2007 by susanaveritt

First of all, let me say thank you to everyone who has donated books so far.  We have been able to touch the lives of many children by sharing books from Cameron.  The books we have received help us to feel love and supported.  It is a small gesture that makes a big difference in keeping Cameron alive in the hearts of others.

Secondly, thank you to all those who have contributed to our memorial fund!  We have learned that creating an endowment means creating a lasting source of ability to help others.  Once our funds have reached the necessary amount we can start donating to children’s charities.  We are almost there, so keep giving.  Also, if your corporation or place of work donates to non-profit orgs, we are one!

Thank you to our friend, Scott Harris.  He designed this site and helps me when I encounter problems.

Thank you to our families, for your unending support.

For bereaved parents

April 22nd, 2007 by susanaveritt

I am a bereaved parent and know that there are others out there who may have experienced a similar loss.  Cameron died suddenly, and I was a witness to the event.  It has traumatized me and will stay with me forever.  I have struggled in many ways to stay afloat, and at the same time, have continued to live my life.  I have learned about myself and my family.  I have learned more about this sometimes cruel world than I wish I had to learn.  Bereaved parents are a unique group.  Unless you’ve been there, there is no way to fully understand.  I hope to hear from other bereaved parents.  How do you honor and memorialize your child?  Better yet, how do you find the strength to face each day?

More about how we got started

April 22nd, 2007 by susanaveritt
For Christmas in 2006, the year Cameron died, our family presented us with a large number of books. We didn’t know that they had been collecting children’s books for us. It started out as an effort to supply children’s books for my examination rooms in my pediatric office. However by the time the books had all been received, there were well over 200 of them. We were amazed at the generosity and compassion of others. So many of our friends and family, as well as people who didn’t know us but were touched by our tragedy, wanted to do something for Cameron. The sight of all those beautiful books was incredible. Each book had been labled with the name of the person or family who had donated it. It also listed their hometown. We found that we had received books from over ten different states and all parts of our home state of Arkansas. On the one year anniversary of Cameron’s death, the book club made its first donation. Our family– myself, my husband, our two living daughters, and my mom and dad– had a full day of handing out books. We started by mailing out eight parcels of books to schools, hospitals, and clinics who had some connection to Cameron. In addition we hand delivered books to six places in the Fayetteville area. Pictures from this day are available to view in the photos section. Most of the institutions that received books from Cameron have sent us books in return. This is a wonderful way to keep the book club alive. Now we have more books to donate to those in need. If you or someone you know is in need of children’s books, please contact us. Cameron would love to share her books with you. Also if you want to donate, check out the donate section of this site! Thanks– Susan
